The timeless allure of Surrealism: a century of dreams and creativity is now celebrated in Lausanne.
This year marks a century since André Breton published his revolutionary "Manifesto of Surrealism," which reshaped the world of art. To celebrate this milestone, 3 exhibitions in Lausanne highlight Surrealism's profound influence on painting, photography, and design. The Lausanne exhibitions provide a comprehensive look at how Surrealism continues to shape art, photography, and design. Its legacy lives on, encouraging us to dream, explore, and see the world in new and imaginative ways.
#1 "Surrealism. Le Grand Jeu" at the Musée cantonal des Beaux Arts / MCBA until 25 August 2024.
At the MCBA, visitors can immerse themselves in the surreal dreamscapes of iconic artists like Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, and Max Ernst. Dalí's fantastical scenes, Magritte's thought-provoking imagery, and Ernst's explorations of the unconscious challenge our perceptions and invite us to see beyond the ordinary.
#2 "Man Ray. Free the photograph" at the Photo Elysée until 4 August 2024.
The Museum of Photography delves into Surrealism's impact on the photographic medium. Featuring works by Man Ray, a key figure in the movement, the exhibition showcases his innovative techniques and surreal imagery. Man Ray's experiments with film and photography highlight how Surrealists used the camera to create dreamlike and uncanny visual experiences.
#3 "Objects of desire. Surrealism and design" at the Musée de design et d’arts appliqués contemporains / MUDAC until 4 August 2024.
Surrealism's playful and imaginative spirit extends to design, as demonstrated at the MUDAC. The exhibition features creative objects inspired by Surrealist themes, like a serving boy modeled after Magritte's famous pipe. These designs show how Surrealism continues to influence and inspire the world of functional art.
