Grossmünster Church Renovation

Preserving Zurich’s Iconic Landmark: Restoration and Sustainability in Action

The Grossmünster Church, with its iconic double towers, stands as a defining symbol of Zurich’s old town. To ensure the preservation of this historic architectural marvel, constructed between 1100 and 1220, a comprehensive restoration project is underway, addressing both the exterior and interior.

Key measures include regulating the indoor climate to mitigate decomposition processes and enhancing the protection of cultural heritage. Starting on 13 January 2025, scaffolding will be erected on the east and south facades to facilitate the repair of the natural stone facade. Excavation work at Zwingliplatz will accompany the restoration process.

The project is planned in three stages:

2025: Scaffolding of the east and south sides.

2026–2027: Full scaffolding of the Grossmünster.

2028: Gradual dismantling begins, concluding a four-year endeavor.

Emphasizing sustainability, the renovation involves minimal interventions, sourcing original materials whenever possible, and only undertaking technically necessary modifications to the historic fabric.
