Henri Matisse: An Invitation to the Voyage at Fondation Beyeler

Discover Henri Matisse's Revolutionary Art Inspired by a Charles Baudelaire’s Poem.

The exhibition "Matisse-Invitation to the Voyage" at the Fondation Beyeler showcases over 70 significant works by Henri Matisse, from private and museums' collections. Henri Matisse was a pioneering figure of Modernism, whose innovative approach to art has left an indelible mark on generations of artists. His work transcended the conventional boundaries of his time, breaking new ground by liberating color from its traditional ties to form and subject. Through simplified shapes and bold use of color, Matisse introduced a fresh, light-filled perspective to painting, forever altering the course of art history.

The exhibition "Matisse-Invitation to the Voyage", draws inspiration from Charles Baudelaire’s celebrated 1857 poem of the same name. Rich with themes of longing, beauty, and exploration, Baudelaire’s poem resonates deeply with the essence of Matisse's oeuvre. The exhibition uses this poetic connection as a conceptual framework, inviting visitors to embark on a journey through Matisse’s life and artistic evolution.

Matisse's work was profoundly shaped by his extensive travels. Whether wandering through the sun-drenched landscapes of Italy and Spain, absorbing the vibrant colors of Morocco, or drawing inspiration from the exotic beauty of Tahiti, Matisse consistently sought to capture the essence of the places he visited.

"Matisse-Invitation to the Voyage" is not just an exhibition; it’s an exploration of the artist’s quest to capture the world’s beauty through his unique lens.

At the Fondation Beyeler, Basel until 26 January 2025.

Additionally, purchasing a ticket to the exhibition offers the opportunity to participate in a grand competition. The main prize is a trip worth CHF 2,000 following in the footsteps of Matisse in Nice. Other artistic prizes include the art prints, and other surprises related to the exhibition.
