The Kunsthaus Zürich will host the first major retrospective in Switzerland dedicated to Marina Abramović, one of the most influential contemporary artists!
This exceptional exhibition, opening to the public on October 25, brings together works spanning all stages of the Serbian artist's long career, with live performances and a new creation designed specifically for the Zurich museum.
Marina Abramović, born in Belgrade in 1946, has revolutionized the art world with her "long-durational performances," challenging the physical and mental limits of the human being. With a career spanning over fifty-five years, her works have become synonymous with exploring bodily and spiritual boundaries, often engaging the audience in deep and transformative experiences.
The Kunsthaus Zürich has curated this Retrospective that encompasses the artist’s entire creative journey, including videos, photographs, sculptures, and drawings. Among the most famous works on display are historical performances such as "Imponderabilia" (1977), where Abramović and Ulay, her artistic and romantic partner at the time, stood naked at the entrance of the MAMbo museum, forcing visitors to pass between their bodies.
Another symbolic performance featured in Zurich is "Luminosity" (1997), where the artist, suspended motionless on a wall, explores the concept of vulnerability and resilience.
The new performance, "Decompression Chamber", invites visitors to pause, decompress, and reconnect with themselves and the present. This participatory approach, which has made Abramović's method famous, forms the core of the artistic experience offered in Zurich.
The retrospective at Kunsthaus Zürich is the result of close collaboration with prestigious international institutions such as the Royal Academy of Arts, London, the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, and the Bank Austria Kunstforum in Vienna. The exhibition’s accompanying program is equally rich: in addition to daily live performances, there will be artist talks, a film program, and a special three-day event in collaboration with the Theater am Neumarkt and the Marina Abramović Institute.
