Marina Abramović in dialogue with Alberto Giacometti

Witness Marina Abramović interaction with Alberto Giacometti’s iconic sculptures in this very special interview!

We continue our journey towards the inauguration of the exhibition dedicated to the renowned Serbian artist with this special video, produced by the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark, in March 2017.

Marina Abramović, set to open her first retrospective in Switzerland on Thursday, October 24, at the Kunsthaus Zürich, shares her personal connection with the works and expressive power of the renowned Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966). She has long felt a deep connection to the art of Giacometti, describing his work as "a meteorite from another galaxy, where all the matter is intensely condensed."

As she mentions in the interview, although her creative journey has been shaped primarily by Nature rather than direct inspiration from other artists, Giacometti has held a special significance for her since the early days of her career, which to her represents “the soul of matter”She relates his works to her own as a performance artist in terms of energy: “Energy is something you can’t touch … To me that kind of energy comes out of his work,” says Abramović. Another reason for finding Giacometti’s sculptures like ‘Walking Man’ and ‘Standing Women’ so powerful is that they are “always new and relevant to whatever art movement coming and going.”

The works by Alberto Giacometti shown in the video are ‘Venice Woman VIII’ (1956), ‘Standing Woman IV’ (1960) and ‘Walking Man’ (1960) as well as a selection of small busts, all from the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art’s collection.
