Oliviero Toscani: Photography and Provocation at the Museum für Gestaltung

Don’t Miss Out: The Most Controversial Narratives That Redefine Modern Photography Exhibition—Now Extended Until 5 January 2025!

Born on 28 February 1942 in Milan, Toscani grew up in a creative environment. His father, Fedele Toscani, was a renowned photojournalist for the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, which undoubtedly influenced Oliviero's path toward photography. He studied photography and graphic design at the prestigious Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich, where he graduated in 1965. His training at this school, one of the most avant-garde of the time, exposed him to new ideas in visual communication, which would later shape his career. Internationally recognized as the creative force behind some of the world's most famous newspapers and brands, he has created corporate images and advertising campaigns for Esprit, Chanel, Robe di Kappa, Fiorucci, PrenatalInter Football Club, Toyota, Artemide, Woolworth, the Italian Red Cross, the Calabria Region, the Umberto Veronesi Foundation, and many others. He has carried out social interest and commitment campaigns dedicated to road safety, anorexia, violence against women, the degradation of the Italian landscape, osteoporosis, stray animals, and integration. As a fashion photographer, he collaborated with magazines such as Elle, Vogue, GQ, Harper’s Bazaar, Esquire, Stern, Liberation, and many others in editions worldwide.

The Museum für Gestaltung honored his monumental and often controversial work with a retrospective exhibition, featuring over 500 images. This solo show is the result of close collaboration with Toscani himself, highlighting the profound impact of his life's work.

Oliviero Toscani's work is indeed impactful and often sparks conversation. His ability to blend art with social commentary, especially through his campaigns for Benetton, makes his photography stand out!
