Richard Paul Lohse: The Power of Colors

Richard Paul Lohse: The Power of Colors

Richard Paul Lohse (Zurich, 1902–1988), one of Switzerland’s most visionary and influential artists of the last century, is now on display at MASI Lugano—more than twenty years after the last exhibition dedicated to his work.

The retrospective brings together over fifty paintings, spanning from the 1940s to the late 1980s, that trace his stylistic evolution and affirm his place at the heart of modern abstraction. Characterized by the expressive power of color—brilliant, contrasting, and precisely defined—his works embody the principles that shaped Lohse’s unmistakable visual language.

The exhibition not only underscores the artist’s role as a pioneer of constructive and concrete art, but also reveals how his practice was deeply connected to the cultural debates, utopian ideals, and formal experiments of his time. These elements lie at the core of Lohse’s rigorous and pioneering method, a legacy that continues to shape and inspire the discourse of modern art worldwide.

The exhibition Richard Paul Lohse at the MASI Lugano until 11 January 2026.
