The Claude Monet Vision of London: Views of the Thames

Claude Monet’s London: A Landmark Exhibition at The Courtauld Gallery

The Courtauld Gallery in London hosts the first in the UK exhibition "The Griffin Catalyst Exhibition: Monet and London. Views of the Thames” dedicated solely to Claude Monet’s iconic Impressionist paintings of London. Known for his mesmerizing depictions of the city’s foggy atmosphere and shifting light, Monet captured the essence of London in a way that continues to enchant art lovers alike.

Best known as a pioneer of French Impressionism, Claude Monet (1840–1926) revolutionized modern art with his exploration of light, color, and atmosphere. What many may not realize is that some of his most captivating works were inspired not by the landscapes of France but by the dynamic scenes of London. Between 1899 and 1901, during three visits to the British capital, Monet captured the essence of the Thames in paintings of Charing Cross Bridge, Waterloo Bridge, and the Houses of Parliament.

This historic exhibition offers a rare opportunity to see London through Monet’s eyes: bathed in mysterious light, radiant colors, and the ever-changing moods of the Thames.

At the Courtauld Gallery, London until 19 January 2025.
